The United Nations General Assembly, through a resolution initiated by Sri Lanka and supported by several countries, declared July 15 as World Youth Skills Day on November 11, 2014. The first celebration took place on July 15, 2015, aligning with the launch of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which emphasises quality education and decent work for all.
The initiative was spurred by the recognition that youth unemployment and underemployment are global challenges. It is particularly in developing nations where access to education and training is limited.
