Why apple cider vinegar carries more risk than benefits

You may be wondering what all the commotion is about given the explosive rise in popularity of apple cider vinegar, or ACV, a seemingly simple kitchen staple. Apple juice is fermented to make ACV. ACV has a gentler, fruitier, tarter flavor than distilled white vinegar, and it has a light golden tint. ACV can be a nutritious way to offer a taste boost to your favorite meals because it has nearly no calories or fat. Despite the widespread reports of its possible health benefits, many of these assertions lack scientific support. While most people get on this trend without much thinking, here are some health risks of apple cider vinegar:

Tooth enamel erosion

The benefits of consuming two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar combined with one cup of water twice a day were evaluated by a 2020 PubMed study. The drink can degrade tooth enamel, the researchers discovered at the end of the 8-week experiment. Since tooth enamel loss is irreversible and permanent, it is imperative to refrain from actions that may contribute to it whenever feasible.

Oesophagal burns

A diagnostic endoscopy revealed that the lining of the entire esophagus was completely raw in several individuals who consume ACV for extended periods of time and have difficulty swallowing meals. They made a mistake by administering undiluted doses of apple cider vinegar every day. This harm is caused by apple cider vinegar’s extremely acidic composition.

Late stomach emptying

Apple cider vinegar may slow the rate at which food passes from the stomach into the lower digestive tract, according to a few human studies published by PubMed. This might cause the bloodstream to absorb nutrients more slowly. Food remains in the stomach for an extended period of time and is not emptied at a typical pace due to malfunctioning nerves in the stomach.

Bone loss and low potassium levels

Large doses of apple cider vinegar administered over an extended period of time were linked in one case report to low blood potassium and bone loss. For six years, a 28-year-old lady drank eight ounces (1 cup) of apple cider vinegar diluted in water every day. Low potassium levels and other blood chemistry issues led to her hospital admission. The woman’s doctors think that because she took enormous amounts of apple cider vinegar every day, minerals were leached from her bones to balance out the acidity of her blood.

How to consume ACV safely?

Always make sure that apple cider vinegar is diluted before drinking it. Additionally, it’s crucial to consume diluted apple cider vinegar sparingly and, ideally, with food. If not, you run the risk of developing undesirable as well as dangerous side effects.
