KARACHI: Hospitals across the city are witnessing an influx of patients with respiratory illnesses as changing weather conditions take a toll on public health.

As per Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital’s emergency in-charge, over 150 patients suffering from respiratory illnesses are visiting the facility daily. Meanwhile, the number of respiratory patients has also exceeded 150 per day at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre as well, a health official from the hospital revealed.

Medical experts said that children were the worst hit by increase in respiratory infections. Many patients are arriving with complaints of sore throat, flu, and persistent cough.

Medical experts warn asthma sufferers experience worsening symptoms due to the present weather conditions.

Health professionals have urged citizens to take precautions, particularly during Ramadan. They recommend avoiding cold and substandard beverages, which can exacerbate throat infections and other respiratory issues.

Moreover, they also advise mandatory mask wearing while venturing outdoors to reduce exposure to allergens and pollutants that may aggravate respiratory conditions and slowdown the spreading of infections.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted hot and dry weather for the city over the next 24 hours, further contributing to the discomfort caused by seasonal changes.

Temperatures are expected to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels recorded at 40%. Warm and dry winds are currently blowing at a mild pace.
