Dick Van Dyke reveals TWO habits he avoided to live to 100

Dick Van Dyke reveals key to living to 100

Dick Van Dyke is reflecting on how he’s made it to 100 years of age and how he feels about aging.

Dick will turn 100 on December 13, and is most happy about “The fact that I made it.”

“I feel really good for 100,” he told People. “Sometimes I have more energy than others — but I never wake up in a bad mood.”

The Mary Poppins star also revealed what he thinks sets him apart from others and the secret to his longevity.

“People say ‘What did you do right?’” he said. “I don’t know. I’m rather lazy,” he confessed, but noted that he has avoided feelings like anger and hate.

“I’ve always thought that anger is one thing that eats up a person’s insides — and hate. And I never really was able to work up a feeling of hate. I think that is one of the chief things that kept me going,” he shared.

“There were things I didn’t like, people I don’t like and disapprove of,” he explained. “But I never really was able to do a white heat kind of hate. My father (Loren Van Dyke) was constantly upset by the state of things in his life and it did take him at 73 years old.”

“When you expire, you expire,” he reflected. “I don’t have any fear of death for some reason. I can’t explain that but I don’t. I’ve had such a wonderfully full and exciting life. That I can’t complain.”

He also credited his wife, Arlene Silver, 54, for keeping him “happy every day of my life” and dubbed her “a joy.”

Dick Vand Dyke’s new book, 100 Rules for Living to 100, is out now.
